Ha, you know what I don't know why I never thought of it before. The comic book apps are actually perfect for carrying around a simple database of the cards.

Last night I loaded up alot of the AN images into Comic Zeal. It lets you view thumbnails of the card, tap to view the full size card, organize them into folders, and you can even create phantom copies of cards so you could concievibly create a folder and drag copies of cards to it to do some makeshift deckbuilding. It actually works surprisingly well.

OK, so I watched a couple of videos about Comic Zeal. Tell me if this sounds about right...

You can effectively make folders and subfolders, so you can do the top level by game, second level by faction, third level by card type or cost or whatever make sense to you...

Each "comic" would be an individual card in JPG format. Is there any problem with the app complaining about them not being the right format?

One of your folders would be a "My Decks" folder. To build a deck, you can 2-finger drag cards to the right edge of the screen, which they call the Slider. This makes a linked copy of the card for organizational purposes but does not take extra storage space.

Once you've dragged all the cards into the Slider, you can go to your Deck folder and paste them into there.

Drawbacks:
1. Cannot search other than by the name field of the comic, which I presume maps from filename?

2. As far as I could tell, you cannot inspect the current contents of the Slider, but it does tell you how many items are in there. Is there a way to look into the slider?

3. It is common to put multiple copies of a card in a deck, but Comic Zeal isn't built to recognize this so it will show you three copies of the same card rather than putting a 3x notation on top of a single card.

So, it's probably a little cumbersome, but it certainly seems workable. Lack of searching seems to me the biggest drawback. I can deal with lumping a bunch of cards together and weeding them out later for lack of being able to view/edit the Slider. Is there a way to put keywords on a comic so you can search for those? It seems like that might be useful for comic collectors as well to tag something with "crossover Wolverine" or "first appearance" or whatever. If it can do this that really jumps it up a notch in usefulness for deck building.

Can you configure how the thumbnails show up? Like maybe I want a 3x3 grid or 4x4 or something?

It's only a $2 app ($5 for iPad/universal version) so if this sounds correct I don't mind picking up a copy to test out.
