Except when you trash a card everyone sees what it is. If you wanted to go down that path, it's a slippery slope. Why not on buy and on gain effects as well? Heck, why not on play?
I doubt the Dom team won't be doing this. As for variants, you can always do whatever you want. In this case, just one card having this execption doesn't seem to be that bad at all.
