Michael,

Froom what I understand, attackers can choose to commit whatever number of units to combat by moving them into the vector (except for jets) and all enemies within that vector are automatically included?

The attacker chooses which units he wishes to commit to an attack instance moving them to the vector INCLUDING jets. This means that if you wish to only attack with one unit and leave the 3 other units you have in the field out of the combat you may. The defender has all his units included in the attack as defenders.

Does this mean that there cannot be opposing units on the same vector without combat?

I assume what you mean here is, can there be units in a attacked vector that aren't automaticly included as the defender if the vector is attacked? The answer to this is no.

If so, what happens to the surviving units?

Units that survive a combat go to the nearest friendly vector. (the field and your stronghold vector are friendly) This means if your in the field and the battle ends you stay in the field (assuming you didn't retreat), likewise for your stronghold vector (from which you can't retreat). If your in your opponents stronghold vector then you fall back to the field after the battle ends.

Can you move past enemies without attacking to attack the vector you want?

Yes you can run right by them high fiveing on the way past.

i think i remember somewhere reading you cant attack a stronghold so long as there are enemy units to defend it. am i correct on this?

This means that when you attack your opponents stronghold you may not target it with an attack until all defending UNITS are killed (notice a commander is not a unit).
